For the last few weeks in the Spot of Grace, we've been considering the reality that our God pursues us. I've based this series on Psalm 23:6, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever".
When I think about this, I come to the conclusion that God, in His pursuit of me, has used several significant people in my life. This week I'd like to tell you about the impact my grandparents had on me. They clearly demonstrated the reality that our God pursues us.
My grandparents lived less than a mile from me for all of my growing up years. We attended the same church, so I saw them regularly. They invited my sister and me to Sunday lunch every other week. I loved those times. I remember that their home felt like a safe place. They asked about my day, and what was going on in my life. And they always had delicious cookies (or biscuits as we call them in England)! However, the part of my relationship with my grandparents I cherish the most is knowing they prayed for me every day.
I remember talking to my grandmother after I had led my grandfather’s funeral. She promised me that although she was now alone, she would continue the commitment to pray for me every day. Knowing this was such a blessing! Over time, as I spoke to grandmother on the phone, she would remind me of that promise. She would say “I prayed for you this morning. I say a special prayer for you because of the calling that God has for your life, especially with all the responsibilities you have. I always say a special prayer for you.”
Although God called my grandmother home several years ago, I still hear those words speaking to my heart. When I think about their prayers I am reminded of my theme for The Spot of Grace over the last few weeks. God has been pursuing me all of my life. My grandparents showed me love. And the prayers they prayed pointed me to Christ. I am sure, in part, that God pursued me in answer to their specific prayers.
Let me remind you of our central verse: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23:6. I am thankful for a God who pursues me every day of my life. I am thankful that He blessed me with godly grandparents who valued prayer. I have much to be thankful for!
I pray that this week’s Spot of Grace encourages you to consider which people in your life God has used in His pursuit of you. I pray that thankfulness will well up in your heart.
