Songs That Move Us: Revelation Song

Good afternoon,

In recent Spot of Grace posts, I’ve been sharing about the lyrics of songs that have moved me. Some of the songs that I’ve mentioned so far in this series are traditional and some are more contemporary. Today, I would like to spend some time thinking about those two words – “traditional” and “contemporary”.

In a recent Worship Pastor Search Committee meeting, I tried a little exercise. The group was made up of folks that covered about a 30 year age difference. I asked each of the group members to define what is, for them, a traditional song and a contemporary song, and to share an example of each. It was interesting that as the discussion went on, it became clear how subjective and personal our definitions were. For some of the older members of the team, “contemporary” included songs from as early as the 1980’s. But for the younger members, songs from the 1980’s and 1990’s were considered “traditional”. It’s very easy for us to perceive that others use the same criteria to define “traditional” and “contemporary” songs as we do, but the reality is that both their age and their experience contributed to their definitions of those terms.

The song I want to ask you to think about today was written in 1999. So for a teenager, this song would be considered an old one. For folks my age and above it’s considered a contemporary song. I love the Revelation Song. It stirs and inspires me. I love the call to worship that is a focus of the lyrics.

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain

 Holy, holy is He

Sing a new song to Him who sits on

 Heaven's mercy seat

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty

Who was and is and is to come

With all creation I sing praise to the King of kings

You are my everything and I will adore You

Clothed in rainbows of living color

Flashes of lighting rolls of thunder

Blessing and honor strength and glory and power be

To You the only wise King

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty

Who was and is and is to come

With all creation I sing praise to the King of kings

You are my everything and I will adore You

 Filled with wonder awestruck wonder

At the mention of Your name

Jesus Your name is power, breath and living water

 Such a marvelous mystery

 Oh, You're worthy, mystery

 You are worthy

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty

Who was and is and is to come

With all creation I sing praise to the King of kings

You are my everything and I will adore You, I will adore You

I did some research and found that the author, Jennie Lee Riddle, was inspired to write this song based on two sections of Scripture:

"And then, as they stood with folded wings, there was a voice from above the dome over their heads. Above the dome there was something that looked like a throne, sky-blue like a sapphire, with a humanlike figure towering above the throne. From what I could see, from the waist up he looked like burnished bronze and from the waist down like a blazing fire. Brightness everywhere! The way a rainbow springs out of the sky on a rainy day—that's what it was like. It turned out to be the Glory of God! When I saw all this, I fell to my knees, my face to the ground. Then I heard a voice." Ezekiel 1:25-28

"… a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper and a carnelian stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads. And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices… Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal… And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures… And they do not rest day or night, saying: ‘ Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!'…"  Revelation 4:2-8

Have a good week.
