Songs That Move Us: Thy Will

Good afternoon,

For the last few weeks I’ve been sharing song lyrics that have had an impact on me. I pray as you consider these songs you will be encouraged as well.

In recent years, my daughter has shared some country songs with me. I have found that I actually enjoy country. (Please don’t tell my family in England!). Many of the songs I have shared and intend to share in the coming weeks are songs I’ve listened to for a while, but the one I’m sharing today I heard for the first time just last week. I was taking my youngest son, David, to school and I turned on the radio. The song Thy Will by Hillary Scott came on. The country tune was enjoyable, but it was the words of the song that instantly struck a chord in me and seemed to convey much of what I have been praying lately. Let me share the lyrics with you:

Thy Will

I'm so confused

I know I heard you loud and clear

So, I followed through

Somehow I ended up here

I don't want to think

I may never understand

That my broken heart is a part of Your plan

When I try to pray

All I've got is hurt and these four words

Thy will be done

Thy will be done

Thy will be done

I know you're good

But this don't feel good right now

And I know you think

Of things I could never think about

It's hard to count it all joy

Distracted by the noise

Just trying to make sense

Of all your promises

Sometimes I got to stop

Remember that you're God

And I am not

So

Thy will be done

Thy will be done

Thy will be done

Like a child on my knees all that comes to me is

I know you see me

I know you hear me, Lord

Your plans are for me

Goodness you have in store

I know you hear me

I know you see me, Lord

Your plans are for me

Good news you have in store

In Matthew, chapter six, Jesus taught us to pray. Verse ten says,

“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

To pray those words requires both faith and trust. This song reminds us that sometimes God’s will is not our will. The author of this song wrote these lyrics after a miscarriage. This song expresses her trust in the midst of her grief. How good it is to know that God hears and answers our prayers.

“I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry.”

Psalms 40:1

Have a good week.
