Songs That Move Us: God

In our current series of the Spot of Grace, we are considering how the lyrics of songs impact us spiritually. Song lyrics and music have an effect on us partly because of experiences we have had. Two particular things in my life have strongly influenced how music has moved me.

The first was the church I grew up in.  Music played a big part in our church and in my family. My mum and dad sang in the choir along with many other members of my family. Later, my dad led the choir. We sang the great hymns of our faith. Those hymns have such deep and powerful content and I remember and can sing many of them today without a hymnal.

The second experience that shaped my passion for hymns was based on the vacations we took as a family each summer. On Sunday evenings we went to the harbor in St Ives, Cornwall. St Ives is one of the most beautiful parts of Great Britain. As the sun was low in the sky, the Salvation Army band would start playing those same great hymns we sang in our church. Sometimes there were several hundred people gathered. I can still remember the conductor standing on an old kitchen table and energetically leading the band and people as they sang. I can almost hear the sea gulls and the ocean even now as I think about those evenings. I could quote several hymns we sang that moved me, but there’s one I would especially like to share with you today.

When I recall that scene in St Ives, I think about the ocean, the sunsets and the beautiful sea breeze, and I think, “How Great Thou Art.” The words of that hymn seem to perfectly communicate my heart’s response to the creation and the revelation of God’s Word. Please take a moment and reflect on these timeless words.

Verse 1

O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder

Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made

I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder

Thy power throughout the universe displayed

Chorus

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee

How great Thou art, how great Thou art

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee

How great Thou art, how great Thou art

Verse 2

And when I think that God, His Son not sparing

Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in

That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing

He bled and died to take away my sin

Verse 3

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation

And lead me home, what joy shall fill my heart

Then I shall bow with humble adoration

And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art

Chorus

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee

How great Thou art, how great Thou art

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee

How great Thou art, how great Thou art

How Great Thou Art is a hymn that has moved me many times. It speaks of the power of the Gospel and the hope we have of eternal life. I pray that as you recall those powerful words you will be reminded of the greatness and wonder of God.

I hope you have a great week,

Pastor Glyn
